| Colonsay is
a remote island off the west coast of Scotland, and the inspiration
for these vibrant designs.
15 miles separate Colonsay from Mull on its
Northern coast, and Westwards is the Atlantic. Only Du Hirteach
lighthouse stands between Colonsay and Canada. But Colonsay is far
from bleak as you will see by the photographs I took while visiting
the island. In a days walk you will see ancient Celtic standing
stones, dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches and rare wildlife and botany.
But of all its attractions, it was the interactions
of sky, sand and sea that really fired my imagination: there is
so much variety of texture and colour.
Standing on a shore of the adjoining island
or Oransay, gazing at the turquoise and ultramarine sea towards
the mountains of Jura, I promised myself that I would remember how
this fabulously beautiful image affected me. I wanted to store those
emotions and freeze them within the miniature confines of my glasswork.
I feel I have captured a little of the spirit of Colonsay in these
tiles and look forward to adding more to this catalogue in the near
future.
